About the Winter Recharge

Join the Oregon Education Association for a Winter Recharge: New & Aspiring Educator retreat. This opportunity connects early career educators and aspiring educators through networking, fun and professional learning. This event is intended for OEA members who are Aspiring Educators (students moving into the profession) and educators in their first five years of the profession, whether education is your first, second, or third career!

The retreat will be held in Newport, OR with time for getting to know other members from across the state. Learn about your state and local union and engage in professional practice conversations like building a safe, welcoming and inclusive school, racial and social justice, and promoting health and wellness. There will also be time for participants to meet in affinity groups and job-alike groups.

The Winter Recharge is an event for OEA members.

Breakout Session Descriptions: Round 1

Getting Union Organized in Your First Year: Learn how to navigate the process of joining and participating in your union!
Creating a Homebase: Cultivating Belonging for Neurodivergent Students: Explore techniques and strategies that will help you build an environment of belonging for nuerodivergent learners.
Education Policy Panel: Take a behind-the-scenes look at how state and national education policy gets made and what’s on the horizon for 2025.
Building a Union Community: What’s Beyond my Department?: Getting stuck in the silo of our own department, grade level, wing, or specialty is typical, especially as a new educator. However, this is far from ideal. Building relationships with colleagues whose work day looks different than our own helps us become a stronger union in a number of ways. Learn how to connect and collaborate with any co-worker, regardless of job title.
Collective Bargaining Campaigns & Union Contracts 101: Curious about what goes into winning a strong contract? We will share some exciting campaign stories and give an overview of what happens before, during, and after each stage of negotiations. Contract examples will also be available as a resource, so you can learn how to quickly find answers about what is covered in a union contract.

Breakout Session Descriptions: Round 2

Perspectives to Innovations in Education: We will explore techniques and technology for supporting today’s students.
Common Issues that Arise in Educational Worksites and How to Address These Issues as a Union: Our ability, as a union, to solve issues is directly related to the amount of collective power we have. Organizing ourselves in each worksite is the most effective way to build power. Learn the steps in this workshop.
Personal & Shared Narratives as an Organizing Tool: Learning from one another’s experiences is a powerful way to build community within our union. Learn and practice organizing your colleagues through sharing your stories and values.
Public Education in Oregon: Who makes the decisions & where do we fit in as educators?: There are many stakeholders in public education. Learn more about the scope of decision-making power each of these stakeholders has (whether it be a school board, the legislature, or ODE) and where we fit in as union educators and decision makers ourselves.
Welcoming New Voices: An Introduction to Local, Statewide, and National Governance, Committees, Caucuses: We have a wide array of opportunities for members to share their voices within our union. Our panel presenters will give an overview of various roles, committees, and caucuses and how to participate in each one.
