In 1972, Chavez fasted for 25 days in protest of an Arizona law banning the right of farm workers to strike, boycott or organize. The fast and the resulting UFW (United Farm Workers)-sponsored grassroots campaign transformed politics in the heavily Latinx state, leading to the election of Latinx governors and legislative representatives. It was through this campaign that the phrase “Si, Se Puede” was first coined and used as a rallying cry.
