Reed Scott-Schwalbach is a Spanish teacher from Centennial High School in East Multnomah County, where she has taught AP Spanish, Community College dual credit, and Spanish for Heritage Speakers. Reed believes language learning not only helps develop a deeper awareness of global connectivity but builds students’ connections to their own community.
Reed is the daughter of a special education teacher. She grew up in small rural communities in Alaska and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas. Reed credits the educators and the varied types of schools and education she received as key factors in shaping her belief of the important role schools play in supporting youth and developing future leaders.
Reed believes in the power of collective action. She became a building representative her second year teaching and during her twenty-two years in education has served as local president, grievance chair, bargaining chair and on the NEA Board of Directors. She deeply believes in the power of educators to create public schools where all our students thrive.
