This day celebrates Mexico's independence from Spain. It is also called "El Grito," a commemoration of parish priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issuing a call to arms — the Grito de Dolores — which triggered the Mexican War of Independence on September 16, 1810. A period of armed conflict took place for many years thereafter. Mexico officially won independence on September 27, 1821
