Mamie Till Mobley was an educator and the mother of Emmett Till, who was murdered in Mississippi. Mamie was born in Mississippi and moved to Chicago at an early age. It was there that her son, Emmett was brutally murdered by White supremacists in 1955 while visiting his cousins. Mamie chose an open casket funeral for her son to showcase to the world the brutality of her young son’s murder. After the acquittal of two of Emmett’s murderers, she continued to fight for justice and civil rights for Black people.
