Our Regional Leaders & Directors
Region I Vice President: Valerie Schiller
Valerie Schiller is a dedicated full-time Language Arts teacher and award-winning Speech & Debate coach at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, the easternmost edge of East Multnomah County. Having moved fifteen times as a child and more than twenty times as an adult, both within and outside of the United States--including multiple levels, subjects, and types of teaching environments before landing at Reynolds--Valerie is adaptable, flexible, and collaborative with all backgrounds of people; the diversity of Region 1 is optimal. Region 1 extends from inner Portland eastward to Gresham and Corbett; southeastward to Clackamas and Gladstone; southward to Oregon City, Canby, and Molalla; southwestward to Tigard, Tualatin, and Sherwood; westward to Beaverton and to Hillsboro, Forest Grove, and Gaston; and around the state to our community college faculty and our education service professionals. Members drive Valerie's union work, steered toward strengthening our teaching conditions and our students' learning conditions, and she looks forward to connecting with you.
Region II Vice President: Kelsy Dunlap
Kelsy Dunlap is a physics and computer science teacher at McKay High School in Salem. Originally drawn into union work as a member of the Early Career Leadership Fellows, they have since taken on a variety of leadership roles both with their local and at the state level. They are passionate about lifting member voices to the state level, organizing and building solidarity, and striving for justice in our communities. Kelsy lives in their dream home with their wife, two dogs, and two chickens, and loves hiking and backpacking, reading, cooking, and all forms of fiber art.
Region III Vice President: Sarah Barclay
NEA Director: Chris Early
Chris Early is a social sciences teacher at Umatilla High School in Umatilla, Oregon. He has been serving as an NEA Director for Oregon since 2021, and has served in several leadership positions in the Umatilla Education Association and the Columbia River UniServ Council. Chris is passionate about equitable, fair, and just treatment of all OEA members and the students they serve.
NEA Director: Adolfo Garza-Cano
Adolfo Garza-Cano is a seasoned, bilingual, K-2 Educator from Portland Public Schools. He is passionate about uplifting and advocating for the historically marginalized, and underrepresented voices of our students, educators, and families. Adolfo is proud to be a Union member and to be a part of a larger movement that continues to Organize, Educate, and Advocate for public education in the name of equity, and social, and racial justice, and human rights at the Local, State, and National level.
NEA Director: Angela Bonilla
Angela Bonilla (she/they/ella) is a proud member of the Portland Association of Teachers (PAT) and 4th grade Spanish Immersion teacher at Scott Elementary in Portland, OR. She has previously served on the OEA Task Force on Organizing Charter Schools, as the President of PAT for and the PAT Bargaining Team. As the eldest daughter of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, she firmly believes in Public Education and its potential to build a just society. She looks forward to amplifying the voices and experiences of our educators and communities at the NEA and in the Halls of Congress!
Community College Director: John Hasegawa
John Hasegawa has over 25 years of teaching experience and currently teaches ceramics at Mt. Hood Community College. As an OEA Board Director, he is a strong advocate for educators, public education, and member engagement. John believes that strong unions are member-centered and member-driven, with members leading the work and shaping the future of the organization. He is committed to listening, building solidarity, and empowering members to have a voice in union decisions. His leadership focuses on collaboration, transparency, and ensuring members remain at the heart of OEA's work.
ESP Director: Becky Torres
Becky Torres has been involved in higher education for more than 33 years and has a passion for helping students succeed with their goals in furthering their education. Becky is proud to have been a student, a graduate, and now an employee of the school where she began her higher education journey, and to now share her knowledge with future students and graduates.
