Lewis Latimer was a Black, self-taught inventor. He worked with Hiram Maxim at the U.S. Electric Lighting Company. He patented the filament that was used for the incandescent lightbulb, which is safer and more durable than the paper filament invented by Thomas Edison. Latimer also worked with Alexander Graham Bell on the design of the telephone.
