Juneteenth is the oldest celebration of the end of slavery. It celebrates the day emancipation finally came to Texas, during which 2000 federal troops arrived in Texas to take control of the state and enforce emancipation of its enslaved people — more than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.
