Gabriel Garcia Marquez Wins the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature

On this date in 1982, Gabriel Garcia Marquez won the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature "for his novels and short stories, in which the fantastic and the realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, reflecting a continent's life and conflicts.” The Colombian author's most prominent and important works include “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and “Love in the Time of Cholera.” It has been reported that only the Bible has sold more copies in the Spanish language than the works of García Márquez, who was affectionately known at "Gabo" throughout Latin America.

The Oregon Education Association (OEA) is a union committed to the cause of providing the basic right of great public education to every student. OEA represents about 41,000 educators working in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 public schools and community colleges. OEA’s membership includes licensed teachers and specialists, classified/education support professionals (ESPs), community college faculty, retired educators, and student members.
