First cases of AIDS reported

In 1981, the first published report of what would ultimately become known as HIV and AIDS appeared in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Very little was known about the disease. Researchers had not yet determined its cause, and there were no tests or recognized treatments.
