Mae Bertha and Matthew Carter became the first Black parents to enroll their children in schools in Sunflower County, Mississippi. The schools were "all white," and had been illegally denying access to African Americans. In retaliation, they were evicted from the land they share cropped and their home was riddled with bullets.
