Lovejoy was a White Presbyterian minister and editor of the St. Louis Observer — an abolitionist, anti-Jacksonian paper. He moved to Alton, IL after his printing press was destroyed for a third time because of his critical opinions on slavery, where he started the Alton Observer. He was murdered in an attack by a mob on his paper's warehouse in November, 1837.
