In 1972, a Washington Star newspaper reported on an unethical experiment of untreated syphilis being conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service and the Tuskegee Institute. The study initially involved 600 black men, and their informed consent was not collected. None of the infected men were ever treated, and 128 of the men in the study died from the untreated disease.
