The formal occupation of Nicaragua began in 1912. It was initially in retaliation for the murder of two U.S. citizens, but endured because of U.S. business and strategic interests. There was a rumor that Japan wanted to build a canal there and the U.S. wanted the sole rights to do so. Sustained opposition to U.S. involvement and the Great Depression finally led the US to withdraw in 1933.
