Anniversary of the Treaty of Payne’s Landing

The Treaty of Payne’s Landing was signed in 1832 after secret negotiations with unauthorized tribal representatives. The treaty called for the Seminole Tribe to be removed from Florida and moved to territory in what is now Arkansas. It also required the return of all runaway slaves who were being sheltered by the tribe. Resistance led to the Second Seminole War (1835-1842).
