The Force Act, commonly known as the Ku Klux Klan Act or the Civil Rights Act of 1871, sought to extend federal protections to African Americans in states where racial terror and violence ran rampant. In 1883, the Court’s decision struck down the Force Act which would have indicted Sheriff R. G Harris and 19 accomplices for an unprovoked beating of four Black men and extended protections across the country.
