In 1712, more than 25 enslaved Africans and 2 Native Americans set a fire in New York in protest to slavery. Nine white men who came to fight the fire were killed. The enslaved Africans and Native Americans were later captured and, except for those who killed themselves, all were brutally executed. This set the stage for wide spread notice of severe consequences for anyone who rebelled against slavery.
