The Trail of Broken Treaties was a demonstration that brought Native American activists from the West Coast to Washington D.C. Its goal was to adress grievances of the Native American population for centuries of ill treatment by the U.S. government. When they arrived in Washington D.C. in 1972, no government officials were willing to discuss their 20-point manifesto. The protestors took over the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) building, and occupied it for a week. Government infiltrators incited violence, which resulted in significant damage to the building and to the public perception of the Native American cause.
