Anniversary of the Legalization of Same Sex Marriage in Multiple States

In November, 2012, voters in Maine, Maryland and the District of Columbia passed referenda enabling same sex couples to legally marry in those states. In Minnesota, voters rejected a constitutional amendment barring same sex marriage. Ballot measures in these four states marked the first time that same sex marriage was approved by popular vote rather than legislative action or court rulings. It was a sign of a turn in voter sentiment on this issue.
