Anniversary of the Land Allotment Acts

The 1830 General Removal Act provided reservation land belonging in common to each tribe. The Land Allotment Acts then allowed the US Government to break up those reservation lands into smaller parcels assigned to individuals, and to sell off “surplus” land to non-native people. Those surplus lands were the richest in natural resources, depriving the Indigenous people of their wealth.
