Anniversary of the International Year of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

The UN General Assembly passed the proclamation in an effort to encourage a new relationship between member nations and Indigenous Peoples, based on mutual respect and understanding. The designation had been requested by Indigenous Peoples worldwide as a means of securing their cultural integrity and rights into the 21st century.
