Nelson Mandela, commander of the militant wing of the African National Congress (ANC), was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to 5 years in prison for inciting a strike. The following year, he and other ANC leaders were charged with sabotage and other crimes. They were all convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment and hard labor. Mandela was released after 27 years when the Apartheid government realized the popular leader was more of a threat to them in prison than outside.
