On July 4, 1881, the Tuskegee Normal School and University was authorized by Alabama House Bill 165 and founded. The school was intended to be a state-funded school for Black students. $2000 was appropriated for teacher salaries and organizers of the school. Booker T. Washington was recruited as the Principal and only teacher. Classes were first held on this day in 1881 in a one-room shanty with 30 students. It would eventually grow into a sprawling 3000+ student University.
