Anniversary of the diversion of the ship The Creole

November 7, 1841
Published: July 31, 2023

The Creole was a ship transporting slaves between Virginia and New Orleans. The ship was taken by force by enslaved people on board and diverted. They ordered it to sail to the Bahamas, a British colony where slavery was abolished. This revolt ignited a fierce debate about slavery in the United States and created a diplomatic crisis between the US and Britain. Most of the slaves were freed by the British and the leaders of the revolt, who were arrested, were later freed.
