Maya Lin, a Chinese American artist, was still a student at Yale when her design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC was selected from nearly 1500 submissions. Lin’s simple V-shaped design was intended to simulate a wound in the earth symbolizing the pain caused by war. Initially derided by many, her memorial is now one of the most popular sites in the country. She was the first women to create a memorial in the Capitol mall.
