Anniversary of the construction of Fort Defiance

On this date in 1851, US troops led by Colonel Sumner built Fort Defiance on the Navajo territory of Dine Bikeyah. It was valuable and important grazing land which the Navajos were forbidden to use. There was intense and bitter fighting between the Dine and US military.
