Hoy played centerfield for several Major League Baseball teams from 1888 to 1903. He is noted as being the most accomplished deaf player in Major League baseball history; and credited for creating hand signals that umpires use for calling balls, strikes, safe and out. While some dispute those claims, it does not take away from the challenges that he overcame to play.
