Anniversary of the Attica Prison Uprising

September 9, 1971
Published: June 27, 2023

In 1971, inmates at the state prison in Attica, New York erupted in the most deadly prison uprising in the United States. Inmates were frustrated with chronic overcrowding, censorship of letters, and deplorable and dehumanizing living conditions. 43 people were killed — 39 by the police and prison guards who fired indiscriminately into an area where hostages were being held. A Showtime Documentary on the uprising was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Documentary Feature category in 2022.
