Fred Korematsu was a Japanese American who refused to evacuate during the Japanese Internment. He was arrested in 1942. The Northern California ACLU represented Korematsu in challenging the constitutionality of the Japanese Internment, but the Ninth Circuit Court and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against him. In 1983, Korematsu’s case was re-opened and his conviction was overturned. Six states now celebrate Fred Korematsu Day on his birthday.
