Anniversary of Arkansas' "Lost Year"

Governor Orval Faubus closed all Little Rock, Arkansas public schools for one year on this day in 1958. He did so rather than allow integration to continue. 3,665 Black and white students were left without access to public education. Ninety-three percent of white students, and only fifty percent of the Black students, gained access to some form of alternative schooling during the year.
