Hawaii was an independent country ruled by Queen Lili’uokalani. Recognizing the strategic and economic value of the Hawaiian Islands, a group of Americans and US-born Hawaiian citizens staged a coup and established a provisional government with Sanford B. Dole as its president in 1893. Hawaii was officially annexed to the US in 1898 and became the 50th US state in 1959.
