The state of Alabama adopted a state constitution that codified disenfranchisement of the Black vote on this day in 1921. They segregated schools and prohibited interracial marriages. They were able to go around the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by hiding these systems in “race-neutral’ language, but they actually instituted statewide trainings to make the systems work against Black Alabamans.
