On September 28, 1891, 1,500 Black longshoreman walked off their jobs in Savannah, Georgia demanding higher wages, guarantees of receiving overtimed pay they were due, and recognition of their union. The strike was well planned, with $5,000 set aside and a public relations blitz assuring full support from the Black community. The strike was ultimately unsuccessful when the company brought in White scab workers to replace the strikers.
