Monday Breakout Sessions

  • Session 1: Successful Organizing Conversations

We will learn a structured conversation you can use to help move your coworkers towards a goal. We will practice talking to colleagues like human beings, so they aren’t left feeling their time was wasted with a gripe session.

  • Session 2: Getting Ready to Bargain (how to build a comprehensive contract campaign)

How unions negotiate is a strategic choice. Seldom do union members experience the actual process of collective negotiations over issues that are crucial, urgent, and relevant to their own lives. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss how negotiations can be different from what has become the norm. We hope to start a robust conversation about collective bargaining: how it is practiced, how it can be improved, and how the practice and process of negotiations relate to power, union governance, and democracy.

  • Session 3: Contract Enforcement & Grievances as Organizing Tools

The gains we make at the bargaining table mean little without active contract enforcement.  This workshop equips grievance handlers with essential skills to understand, apply, and defend their collective bargaining agreement.  Learn how to identify violations, navigate grievance procedures effectively, and mobilize members to ensure the terms of your hard-won contract are upheld.

  • Session 4: Member-Driven Communications

Member-driven union communications prioritize two-way dialogues, peer-to-peer outreach, and active listening over top-down broadcasting. By utilizing localized rep structures, digital platforms, and continuous feedback, we can empower rank-and-file members to shape bargaining goals and mobilize for collective action.
