Joining the Fight to Save Our Schools
On the first day of school, Portland Public Schools (PPS) Superintendent Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong laid out proposals to close as many as 20 schools across the Portland region. There was an immediate outcry against the plan from educators and community members, who were shocked to learn about the magnitude of potential school closures. Immediately, our members from our local union, PAT, jumped into action to Save Our Schools.
Since then, Superintendent Armstrong has proposed three options for the Portland Public School Board to consider:
- Option A: Close 14 schools
- Option B: Close 11 schools
- Option C: Pause
Closing, consolidating, and transforming programs at over 25 schools is a dramatic change. It’s critical that PPS get the process right, which requires slowing down and involving more stakeholders. Students and families deserve a plan to ensure every student has access to a well-resourced high-quality school.
Closing schools is not a plan, it’s a reaction. Our students deserve better. Families deserve better. Educators deserve better.
We ask that the district exhaust every available option it has before considering closing schools. And at PAT, we will fight hard to secure quality education funding because students and families deserve high quality, well-resourced neighborhood schools.
